On October 31th, 2003, Bethany Hamilton was surfing, just as she always did, without a care in the world. In a tranquil sea, she relaxed, unaware of the darkness that lurked in the waters below her. Out of nowhere, a shark leapt out of the water and attached itself to her arm, snapping it off whole. Bethany claims that she felt no pain, just pressure as her arm was bitten off. According to her family, Bethany did not scream out in pain, instead calling for help, yelling, "I was just attacked by a shark!" Struggling, she and those with her dragged her to shore, placing her in the back of their truck and rushing her to the hospital. Doctors say that she lost about 60% of all of her blood, and was likely to become infected and perhaps fall prey to the many medical setbacks an amputee can have. Little did they know that in saving Bethany's life, they were creating a force to be reckoned with that would, one day soon, inspire a nation with her story of resilience.
